《Bronze Tripod》

It is the heritage of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Period. It is 26cm in diameter and 19.5cm in height, weighing 3,750g. It was unearthed in Qinzhou district of Tianshui city.

Tripod in Chinese is called Ding. It was originally a cooking ware. It was also used to hold fish and meat for sacrifice and banquet. It was first made and used in the Period of Er'litou Culture, but gained popularity and reached its summit in the Shang Dynasty and Zhou Dynasty. It was still in use till the Han and Wei Dynasty. As the main food utensil among various bronze vessels to offer sacrifices to ancestors or gods on ceremonies, it was the symbol of power and status. According to the written records and archaeological excavation, in the West Zhou Dynasty, there was a strict regulation for the number of tripod or Ding. The number varied according to the social status.
